2012 RRVW Competition Category Definitions

1. Relief: Includes deep, shallow and pierce (cut out) relief developed on a relatively flat surface. This includes acanthus carvings.

2. Animals: Includes busts, full body, painted and unpainted realistic animal figures.

3. Stylized: Creation of form but not necessarily detailed.

4. Caricatures: Includes pieces with an extortion or exaggeration of distinguishing features.

5. Birds: Includes realistic painted and unpainted song birds, waterfowl and raptors.

6. Human Figure: Includes all realistic painted and unpainted full human figures, busts and masks.

7. Chip Carving: Includes items with an incised pattern or design placed directly into the wood by removal of chips of wood to form an engraved design lower than the wood surface.

8. Fish/Amphibians/Reptiles: Includes all such creatures painted and unpainted.

9. Religious and Mythical: Includes any fantasy subject or group including nativities, elves, santas, dragons, father Christmas, wizards and the like.

10. Unusual Wood: Includes any subject with natural, painted or stained finish with a portion left in its natural raw state such as bark, driftwood, pine knots and roots.

11. Non Wood: Includes any piece carved from stone, antlers, gourds, etc.

12. Canes and Walking Sticks: Includes all finished and unfinished sticks carved or uncarved.

13. Spoons: Includes carved utensils painted and unpainted.

14. Miscellaneous: Includes any carved piece not included in any of the previous categories. (intarsia, woodburning, tramp art, toys, etc.)

15. Instructor Assisted/Team Carved: Carved/painted as a result of a class or formal instruction or with the help of other individuals. Names of all team members must appear on entry form. Does not qualify for Best of Show or Best of Level.
